Every year the Department appoints a Commission of professors to organize and run the Italian language test for non-EU students living abroad. The test is required for applicants who have submitted their application through the Universitaly platform and who do not have a qualification that exempts them, as explained in Italian Language Test Requirements.

The test takes place before enrolment and checks whether candidates are able to attend classes taught in Italian, study from Italian textbooks and pass final exams.

How the Test Works

The test has two parts:

  • Oral interview: about your background, why you chose your study program, and your knowledge of Italy and the Italian language.
  • Reading and comprehension: you will read a short passage taken from one of our textbooks. Afterwards, the Commission will ask questions to check your understanding and reflections.

Commission (Academic Year 2025/26)

  • Chair: Piera Margutti
  • Members: Fabio degli Esposti, Francesca Cialdini
  • Substitutes: Giovanna Buonanno, Laura Turchi

The Chair coordinates the work of the Commission and makes sure that all candidates receive clear instructions on how to connect online and take the test.

The test is offered twice a year, in July and September, so that students can complete the procedure in time to obtain a visa and take part in admission selections where required.

About a week before the test, the Student Office will contact you with all the details about the online connection and the procedure. The results will also be communicated by the Student Office, based on the official report prepared by the Commission.
