An internship is a period of professional training offered by companies, institutions, associations, and foundations that host students and recent graduates to help them enter the labour market.
The duration of an internship can vary, although regulations set a maximum of 6 months (24 months for individuals with disabilities).
The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia offers two types of internships: curricular (for students) and extra-curricular (for graduates). For the latter, it is important to note that as of July 1, 2019, a new Regional Law ER No. 1 of March 4, 2019, concerning "Provisions on internships. Amendments to Regional Law No. 17 of August 1, 2005" came into effect. Due to this change, the organization of all post-graduation internships by the Department have been suspended. For these "extra-curricular" internships, which are aimed at new graduates seeking their first job experience, it is necessary to contact Regional Employment Agencies and accredited Employment Services.
For information about curricular internships, students should contact the organizational tutor. The tutor is available for appointments both in person and online. To schedule a meeting, an email should be sent to stage.dslc@unimore.it.
- Promoting Entity (University)
- Host Company
- Intern (Student)
The University organizes the internship through the collaboration of two parties:
- Organizational Tutor (Luca Rubbiani)
- Academic or Scientific Tutor (a university professor chosen by the student)
The Company will appoint a Company Tutor, who will be responsible for the intern's training in the company.
Who is the Academic or Scientific Tutor?
The Academic or Scientific Tutor is the person that will assess the actual learning experience acquired by the student during the internship. The tutor is chosen by the student and is a university professor, who teaches a subject most relevant to the internship.
When setting up the internship, the student needs to provide the name of the professor who has agreed to act as the Academic/Scientific Tutor to stage.dslc@unimore.it. The student should also contact the academic tutor via email and provide them with the details of the internship experience (name and address of the company/organization) and the activities proposed by the host organization that will be undertaken during the internship.
The internship is converted into academic credits (1 credit corresponds to 25 hours of work).
It is possible to arrange for a longer internship with the company and the Academic/Scientific Tutor, who will evaluate the project as suitable for earning additional credits.
In the professional world, the focus is on "training" and "skills" rather than credits. Consequently, the duration of the internship varies depending on the project proposed by the company and is measured in months rather than hours.
Companies, especially larger ones, may offer internships longer than the hours required to earn credits, based on their needs. This allows students to gain experience and be considered for future job opportunities.
Curricular internships are unpaid. They are considered educational activities rather than work activities, involving a balance between work performance and educational experience (such as work culture orientation, learning a role, and practical application of theoretical skills).
At its discretion, the company may choose to provide the intern with expense reimbursements.
Trainees have three main options for securing an internship:
1. Contacting Partner Companies
Students who are interested in an internship can submit their curriculum vitae to stage.dslc@unimore.it. Internship opportunities from various sectors, including corporate, private, local entities, and public agencies, will be posted periodically on the Facebook page of the Department’s Internship Office. Students must register with the group to have access to information.
2. Through Personal Contacts
If a student has secured an internship on their own, they should send the internship details to the organizational tutor via email at stage.dslc@unimore.it. The tutor will provide instructions on how to proceed with the internship activation process.
3. Placement Services Notice Board
Students can also check the UNIMORE Placement Services notice board for available internship positions.
Internships can only start once the training project has been drawn up and approved.
1. For Host Organizations (Companies/Entities)
Companies MUST REGISTER (Instructions) on the Placement Platform.
The Platform allows registered companies to request an internship agreement and subsequently create one or more training projects. Registered companies must log in:
Login for Registered Companies
Password Recovery for Registered Companies
2. For Students
To access the Placement Services Portal to view, print, and sign their training projects, UNIMORE students must be registered on Almalaurea and have completed/updated their curriculum vitae.
For Registered Students/Graduates
Password Recovery for Students/Graduates
New Registration:
After logging into their AlmaGo personal page, students should select "Internships. Manage Your Internships" to view the details and status of the training project requested by the host organization.
NB: The training project can only be submitted by the host organization.
At the end of the internship, students must send their attendance sheet (Tabella presenze tirocinio) and completion-of-Traineeship form (Scheda torocinio) to the academic supervisor by email. The supervisor will add credits and sign the form, then send it to the Department Board (“Giunta di Dipartimento”) for validation.
Credit recognition will be approved at the Department Board meeting following the submission of the forms. The minutes will be sent from the Department’s Administrative Office to the Student Services Office, which will update the credits in the student’s records (“libretto”).
NB: It is possible to undertake curricular internships without credit recognition (voluntary internship), provided that the internship takes place during the degree course.
